|oh qantas, you suck
i'm in the korean airport and should be pigging out on quality asian cuisine, but it's like 4am here so nothing's open yet. my flight here was rocktastic, but the qantas people at the sydney airport suck majorly...i had to wander around on a wild damn goose chase over the airport because they wouldn't let me through one checkpoint with bags but i needed to get through to check the stupid bags. more on that later when i give the full way-home update. the good thing is i smuggled knitting needles onto the plane and learned a celtic knot cable. yeah, i'm a loser. as of this moment, i am a pitcher of iced tea, a pot of fusilli pasta, an industrial econ final, a tram ride, a train ride, 4 flights and a drive away from home.
damn, that feels cool.
and for your general amusement, a silly personality thinger is here my results are lj-cut because i'm tidy like that.

|it's almost time
i'll be coming home soon. in less than a week, really.
packing sucks, i have too much stuff. i'm not actually sure how i'm going to get all of it home.
so this was an interesting few months. didn't get to see as much of the land down under as i wanted to, but time and funds were kinda limited. it's an exucse to come back, if nothing else. sorry kids if i didn't write enough postcards, i really suck at that kind of thing.
but yeah, i really want to be home again. home with my family and my friends and my cheez-its and tom and ud and the fishhouse and television and american food and normal internet and my cell phone and whatever else i've missed.
aussie's great, but it is more than time to come home. Current Mood: pensive

|sunny sunny day
today i went out to the city to grab a new phone card, but i ran into my friend ryann on the way and added a little trip to south melbourne beach. definitely more exciting than being lazy and staying inside all day. the beach is awesome and i got some fantastic shells. there weren't any waves, but i don't surf (yet) so it's all good. lizzie said she'd call me next time she goes out and i can learn on her little bro's board. got some pics of the beach, i'll be making a new album for melbs scenery (since i noticed i don't have that many pics of the city i live in!) this week...classes are over so i haven't got anything else to do! |nature hates me
so this weekend i did another 3-day camping trip. this one was in wilson's promontory, so far south you can see antarctica. right now i'm sore, tired, and my foot is bleeding...here's whybackpacking
basically, my pack weighed as much as i do. this is because i eat too much, and my food was heavy. so was my tent, my clothes, etc. i also had to bring a towel, because it just made me feel more comfortable. and because a towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.sealer's cove
the walk to sealer's cove was about 10k, mostly through rainforest and swamp. i had to take a little nature pee, and what was next to me? a WOMBAT! so, just for tom, i took a picture of it. wonder what the wombat was thinking, some random person with her pants down taking its photo? it rained for a little bit, but it cleared up by the time we reached the beach. then the hellish part of the trip happened...the river crossing
to get to the campsite, we had to cross a stream. stream is not a good word for this, because it was high tide and the thing was a river. it was about 10m across, and the water was chest-deep with pretty heavy currents. we all stripped down to underwear and raincoats and waded across, but i slipped and sliced my foot on a rock, and the pain plus my heavy pack made me just tip forward. i got back up, but then the current pulled me back in. so basically, i fell in a river with a heavy pack full of things that ought to be dry. by the time i got out, i was freezing, bleeding, and so hysterical i didn't stop laughing for about an hour and a half. somehow my camera and food were in waterproof bags, so i was lucky about that, but everything else was soaked.camping for the nite
as soon as our tent was set up, i crawled into my sleeping bag, ate my sammich, and didn't move for the rest of the nite. the next morning i was attacked by parrots who wanted my rice krispie treats. not so pleasant.waterloo bay
ok, this was gorgeous. the beach was white. pure white, like snow. the hike to it kinda sucked, because there was a bit of mountain climbing and a lot of mud, but it was nice.oberon beach
day 3 was a 16k walk, so we had to get up at sunrise in order to make it to the carpark by lunchtime. i ran out of normal water, and had to fill up my nalgene at a stream. eww. eww. eww. i survived, though. we made it to the beach and i put on my bathers and did a baywatch run for the water. it was a long run, because oberon beach is super huge.
that's all i can think to write now...i need a nap. i'll edit this later with more details. Current Mood: drained

|snap, crackle, pop
rice krispies do not exist in australia. they have rice bubbles
so i got to thinking, maybe the reason i can't find cheez-its is because i'm just not looking for the right aussie brand name?
not so. i asked the guy at the store and he was utterly confused about the little orange cheddar snack crackers. as in...why would anyone eat those?
moron. Current Mood: curious

fiji was nice, relaxing times. here's the highlights:arrival
the sun is hot and the ocean is so blue it's like kool-aid. tropical paradise, oh yes. our resort was on its own little island. this was cool because we got to take a wicked boat tour, and were greeted with fun fruity island drinks. it was also nice to walk around barefoot because the ground was sand for most of the place. beachcomber is pretty nice, the island was small enough that we could walk the whole way around in less than half an hour.sunburn
we woke up to some drums at about 8am for brekky, which was really yum - pineapple pancakes and fresh fruit - and then went out to tan. for as early as it was, the sun was tres hot, and i got a little burnt. read some trashy lawyer fiction (gotta love john grisham) on the beach, and was generally lazy all day.night
the girls and i got insane little tropical drinks with pineapples on the rims of the glasses, and the resort was one where you just charge everything to your room and don't worry about cash til you leave. this is tricky: we noticed that the little fruity island drinks were like $12 each. the bar was also aware that fiji's duty free shops have cheep cheep booze, so they had rules that you couldn't drink your own stuff until the bar closed. we managed to get around this by pouring our alize (this fruity stuff we bought) into our bar glasses and passing them off as drinks from the bar.island hopping
tuesday we went hopping around all the other little islands. i have bad luck with the little boats, because everyone else was dry while i got so splashed with waves that the guy driving the boat gave me a raincoat. none of my friends really felt like switching seats...wonder why! we went to castaway island and a couple others. if i ever go back to fiji, i'm staying on plantation island. it is soo luxe, and the resort is bigger than beachcomber. probly cause the island is way bigger, but it had more things to do. we went snorkeling on a reef on the way back, good times. i took my little underwater camera and got some pics of the cool fishies and the neon blue starfish. shopping
wednesday we went to the mainland and walked about downtown nadi. our cab driver was hilarious, and we had to make him pull over so sarah could pee. oops. then he almost crashed into a bus while passing in the wrong lane, but pulled this wicked stunt driving move and got us back into our lane. and our hour-long cab ride plus the return trip (he waited for us while we shopped) was like, 15 bucks. noice. we got lunch and then shopped, haley and morgan bought this cute little coconut bra and grass skirt for their niece. i got a tiki mask, because i just needed one really bad. or something.kava
me and the aussie girls (jade and lizzie) had some kava on wednesday nite. it might be the traditional and ceremonial drink of fiji, but it tastes like dirt water. the palace
the little island huts are called bures, and bure #6
(aka the palace) was the place to be. i met more aussies and some brazilians, and hilarity ensued. there was a crab race at the bar, and a bula dance (kinda like a drunk macarena) and a cover band that played island versions of random songs (like 'knockin on heaven's door'). i went to bed a little early, cause getting up at 8am every day when it's 6am melbs time is killer. the next day we found the brazilians on the beach - waking up face down in the sand at lunchtime.more sunburn
i got a little lobster-ish, but lizzie was fried. the poor girl fell asleep tanning, and got horribly burnt. she kept appearing at the bar for milkshakes and then going back to hibernate in her room away from the scorching sun.snorkel fun
we decided to snorkel near the beach on friday, and there was this girl who came with us who was - no joke - afraid of fish. we got about 7 meters out and were in waist-deep water, and she starts screaming and thrashing around like she's drowning. we all thought she saw a shark or a jellyfish...nope. she was scared of the little rainbow striped fishies. so much for her going snorkeling. i got to see a cool little reef and so many kinds of tropical fish it was nuts. total jacques cousteau moment. ellen, you would love it, i'm getting my film developed soon.time to leave
the last nite, we went bed a little earlier than the people who weren't leaving because we had to take a boat to the airport early in the morning. i was trying to sleep when the funniest scene played out across the room between one of the drunk american girls and this aussie guy she'd hooked up with that she met the day before.girl: oh, i'm so sad! i'm leaving tomorrow.
girl: are you going to miss me? i am going to miss you soooo much!
girl: tell me you'll miss me.
guy: you got a great ass on ya.
girl: i think we had such a special time together! i am going to think about you everrrry day.
girl: well, aren't you going to miss me lots?
girl: i think i'm in love with you! i'll have to see you again!
guy: yea, i'm going back to the bar
girl: i need your address so we can visit each other!
guy: *has already left for the bar, sees another girl in the doorway and slaps her ass*
did i mention that she had met him the day before? yeah.
so that was fiji. the trip home sucked because our flight got delayed and customs took a while, but it was a nice little vacay! now i'm back in melbs and it's time to be serious-ish again. can't wait for the semester to end...papers suck! Current Mood: mellow

that's right, kids. i'm going to fiji.
white beaches & turquoise ocean. and little drinks with umbrellas.
i'll be gone for a week, and when i come back, i'll be nice & tan. i'll take pictures, i promise. yes, tom. bikini pictures. Current Mood: giddy

|that sydney place
just got back from sydney. silly good times with the desi crew and tiff. here's the breakdown: friday
wake up before sunrise to catch a cab to the airport. am told by airport security that my light purple, plastic, not pointy (size 8) knitting needles are a dangerous weapon. this was not so pleasant, because the inspector totally ripped out a couple rows of my knitting when he took the needles. end up having to check them...how silly is that? i wait around baggage claim looking for purple knitting needles taped together with a checked luggage tag.
arrive in sydney, drop my things at my hostel (yes, i stayed in a hostel. at least it was a nice, clean one) & meet up with everyone at the aquarium. got tickets for a boat cruise that rockets around sydney harbour and stops at all the touristy things, and you can get on and off as you like, because the boat's so fast it'll be back in an hour from any given stop. got to see the opera house, the rocks, the botanical gardens, cockle bay, the bridge, the circular quay. all that jazz. we were told we had
to eat lunch at watson's bay, so we hopped down there. fantastic seafood. never had such good squid. took touristy pictures and did the sightseer thing, and then went to king's cross (the red light district) for some thai dinner. took a little walk, checked out the funny names of sex shops (ponky's was exceptionally cool) and then back to the hostels for a semi-early nite. i should note that everyone in my room was german, but none of them spoke english. that was all kinds of interesting, let me tell ya.saturday
were supposed to go on a tour, but the bus broke down, so we ditched it and went to bondi beach. great times, i bought a new bikini & got to test it out while tiff & goy made a big sand ass. i thought it was a sand castle, but when they finished it was just a giant ass. crazy kids. i'm a little but tan, not that you can tell next to my desi friends.
went to coogee beach next for some snacks & shopping, then headed back to the city for dinner at a pub. if you've never eaten at a pub, do it now! it's ridiculously good, and soo cheep. i got a steak and chips (fries) for 5 bucks and a pint for 3. had to grab dessert at this french bakery across the street, and shocked my friends by eating a giant chocolate croissant and then getting a cheese-and-fruit one right after...what can i say, i'm the resident glutton?
went to a dance club after, but the music was le suck
, and i was tired after all that sugary dessert. back to the hostel again.sunday
bridge climb (for the girls, goy went to the zoo to see the monkeys and tigers) in the morning, followed by the market (corn on a stick!!!) and some souvenir shopping. i am in awe of how indian girls can bargain...we got tshirts at an overpriced tourist boutique for 7 bucks apiece, when the original tag said 25. this makes me feel mucho better about splurging on that bikini. grabbed some subway, then headed for the train station so we could meet harry's family and have dinner there, but when we called him it turned out he was super ill, and we had to make other plans.
other plans equaled dinner at a posh indian restaurant in darling harbour. delush. i had daal (black lentils) and saffron rice, and then dessert was some gelato from the little place next door. went to see the opera house at nite, and that was our sydney. had to sleep sorta early, cause i had to catch a train to the airport at about 7.
good times. we decided that purvi & goy are 'mom & dad' cause they figured out our tours and train tickets and they were nagging and fighting the whole time. cracked me up. i kinda wish i was going on the rest of holiday with all of them, but i already got my fiji trip booked, and well...it's fiji. |i needed that
my little sister is the coolest. we just had a nice long phone chat while waiting for the parentals to get home so i could talk to them.
also, for anyone who has never defrosted a freezer, it is an experience. my kitchen floor is a puddle, and all of my towels are now drying on the electric heater. who knew a little frost on the icebox would amount to that kind of flood? Current Mood: relieved
|Thursday, September 9th, 2004|
went on my first ever train ride today. i was unaware that melbourne's public transit was this good. i buy one ticket that's like, 5 bucks, and i get to go on any trams, trains, or buses that i like. soo much cooler than paying like 20 bucks for a cab. and i got some interesting looks for knitting while on the train (what else would i do on a 45 minute train ride?) Current Mood: impressed

ok, just in case anyone hasn't noticed, the web server i was using was sucky and had a ton of downtime, so i moved most of the little journal entries to here. it's easier, and it won't crash as much. i'm saving my wine recommendations as a word document, and i'll post them in here sporadically.
